In June/July 2007 all schools were visited and most teacher and students taught about Jatropha. The information included the plant, oil and uses of the oil. There were also practical ways to show how the lamp is used.
In 2008 a follow up to all the schools Energy Africa Ltd. was conducted between July 22 and 29th. The program included the same 12 primary schools, and one secondary school in the EA Ltd. area of operation (Shimba Hills
The overall finding is that schools were keen to grow Jatroha and many have planted trees. The children seem to get the concept of renewable fuel, produced locally, and were excited about it.
The 2008 Jatropha presentation included demonstration of seeds and how they burn, lamp, oil and soap made Jatropha. Generally the knowledge of renewable energy seems to have increased at the schools, and knowledge of EA Ltd. is growing. A retired teacher (misses Kieti) was assisting in the information sharing at the schools.
Follow up

EA Field Assistant appointed to be the point person/staff in EA Ltd. responsible for follow up of all schools. Important that schools now also have point person responsible for Jatropha planting on the school compound.
Documenting follow up of schools, including number of plants and status of plants, and appoint point person/teacher at each school will help assess performance
The schools have only been given some few seedlings each, to make sure that follow up closely and learn about the tree, before more seedlings/seeds are to be distributed. EA Ltd. also encourage the schools to get seed material themselves, it is now easy for anybody in Shimba Hills to have access to seeds/cuttings/seedlings.
